Eligible US residents whose Coinbase account shows ACH and crypto sends, and whose state supports the required Kraken funding and crypto-transfer features.

Kraken does not serve residents of Maine or New York.
Kraken's official restrictions page says crypto transfers are unavailable in Indiana.
The same page says fiat transfers are unavailable in Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Utah.
Coinbase and Kraken can apply account-specific verification, funding, and withdrawal holds. The route is not complete until both accounts show the required actions.

Cost before you start

The real cost appears only in the live order preview

You pay an explicit buy fee, a spread built into the quoted price, and a Bitcoin withdrawal fee if you send the BTC out. The card below is a hypothetical example of that stack. It is not a Coinbase or Kraken quote.

Do not subtract the spread twice. The BTC amount in a buy preview already reflects the quoted price and its spread, so the $0.74 is only a diagnostic. The exact formula is: BTC shown in the buy preview − BTC withdrawal fee shown at send confirmation = BTC reaching the wallet. Price movement and tax are excluded.

$100.00 is the total cash leaving the bank account. The fee comes out of it; it is not added on top.
The $2.00 explicit buy fee is an assumed figure, not any exchange's current fee.
The spread is assumed at 0.75% of the remaining $98.00. That is $0.735, shown as $0.74, measured against a reference price at the same moment.
The Bitcoin-network withdrawal fee is assumed to be worth $0.50. It applies only if you send the BTC out.

Coinbase documents ACH for US customers, buying crypto with a verified payment method, and sending supported assets to an external wallet.

The confirmation screen—not this page—determines when ACH-funded assets become available to send. Coinbase shows that account-specific timing before you confirm.
Coinbase's fee disclosure says simple buys charge a variable fee and include a spread, both shown in the preview. Coinbase Advanced uses the order book and does not include a spread.
Exact services can be restricted by account, location, security review, or payment method.
Confirm that the withdrawal flow says BTC on the Bitcoin network rather than a wrapped-BTC route.

Kraken documents a US onboarding route, ACH funding through Plaid for eligible accounts, spot trading, and crypto withdrawals with an explicit network check.

This backup fails the route in the excluded or transfer-restricted states listed above.
Kraken says Plaid ACH adds no extra processing fee, but ordinary Instant Buy and transfer costs remain.
Kraken documents a seven-day withdrawal hold on the amount funded through Plaid ACH.
Verify the Bitcoin network in the live withdrawal screen before saving an address or sending funds.

Pass the state and account gate

Confirm that Coinbase shows ACH and crypto sends. Confirm that Kraken serves your state and supports both USD funding and crypto transfers there.

Set up Coinbase as the Main exchange

Finish KYC, link a bank account in the same legal name, and read the available-to-send date before confirming the ACH transaction.

Buy BTC on spot

Use the BTC spot purchase flow. Before confirming, record the total charged, the fee line, the quoted price, the BTC amount you will receive, and the payment method.

Test the Bitcoin withdrawal path

Wait until the balance is available to send, select BTC and the Bitcoin network, verify the address, and start with a small test withdrawal.

Prepare Kraken as the Backup

Finish verification and confirm ACH, BTC spot, and Bitcoin-network withdrawal support before a Coinbase hold or account problem makes the backup urgent.

Does this Bitcoin route work in every US state?

No. Kraken does not serve Maine or New York. Its restrictions page says crypto transfers are unavailable in Indiana and fiat transfers are unavailable in Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Utah.
